Procedures for bringing a field of eight teams to the State Class A Basketball Tournament were changed for the 1981 season and since that time the West Region has sent nine different teams as their representatives from 1982-2008. From 1981-1990, advancement to the state required that a team fi nish in the top three places at the West Region Tournament. Beginning with 1991, the top four teams advance. The following is a record of each team’s placement for the 28 years of this tourney (the numbers indicate the scores in the games for fi rst,

Bismarck has advanced to the state tournament in 24 of the 30 years that the West Region tournament has
been a state qualifying event, while Minot has advanced 23 times. Century has qualifi ed 18, Williston 17 times,
Dickinson 8, St. Mary’s 7 and Mandan in 6. Belcourt, in eighteen years of West Region membership, advanced
three times, while Beulah made it to state one year in Class “A”. This will be Jamestown’s fi fth year as a West
Region member under the current format.
