Dickinson Trinity edges May-Port-C-G in another State B Championship thriller!! Dickinson Trinity narrowly defeated May-Port-C-G 34-32 Saturday night to claim the 2006 State Class B Boys Basketball crown. Saturday night's state championship game added yet another chapter to the storied history of the North Dakota State B. In a game that will be talked about for its defense and grind-it-out style of play, the Dickinson Trinity Titans came out on top 34-32, handing the May-Port-C-G Patriots a difficult loss in a rematch of the 2003 title game. The game was a hard fought defensive display that didn't see its first scoring until more than half of the first quarter had elapsed. The game's largest lead belonged to Trinity, a seven-point margin in the early second quarter. May-Port-C-G then turned the tables on the Titans with a 13-point run over about 4 and a half minutes in the second quarter and ended with the Patriots leading 17-11. Much of the game saw the two teams within four points from that point on as both played aggressive defense that limited the quality opportunities for both squads. Free throws turned out to be Trinity's Achille's heel (5 of 15), a weakness Saturday that could have kept them out of the game. The game stayed close until the end, ending on a mid-range jumper by Trinity's Landon Smith that gave Trinity the victory. The final score gave the Titans with their first lead since just past the five minute mark of the second quarter. Smith's basket came just as time expired, bringing a dramatic close to the state tournament for the second year in a row. The shot was from the same area on the court as last year's winning bucket in the FargoDome, which came just as time expired in the second overtime and gave New Rockford-Sheyenne the victory over Bottineau. In Saturday's earlier games, Parshall, Minot Bishop Ryan, and Four Winds all came out on top. Parshall defeated Richland 59-51 to claim seventh place, Minot Ryan topped P-B-K 70-63 for the consolation championship, and Four Winds topped Shiloh Christian to take third place honors.
